Natural Stone

Natural stone tiles are made from genuine stone quarried directly from the earth, unlike synthetic materials such as ceramic or porcelain. Each tile features unique patterns, colours, and textures formed naturally over time, giving them a distinctive character and timeless appeal.

There are several types of natural stone commonly used in tile form:

  • Marble – Valued for its luxurious appearance, marble features unique veining and a wide range of colour options. It’s often used for elegant floors, countertops, and wall coverings.
  • Limestone – Known for its soft, earthy tones, limestone is ideal for creating warm, rustic, or Mediterranean-inspired interiors.
  • Slate – With its textured surface and natural variation, slate brings an organic, rugged feel to a space. It’s durable and well-suited to areas like kitchens, bathrooms, and outdoor patios.
  • Travertine – Recognised for its pitted texture and aged look, travertine comes in neutral tones and works well in both classic and contemporary interiors, especially for floors and walls.

Overall, natural stone tiles offer a unique, durable, and environmentally friendly option for a wide range of interior and exterior applications.

Natural stones such as marble, travertine, and limestone are inherently porous and should be sealed to protect them from stains and moisture damage. Sealing creates a protective barrier that helps prevent spills and dirt from penetrating the surface, preserving the stone’s appearance and durability.

Resealing is typically recommended every 1 to 2 years, depending on the type of stone, its location, and the level of use. High-traffic areas or outdoor installations may require more frequent sealing to maintain optimal protection.

While it’s true that many old stone floors were never sealed and still retain their beauty, all natural stone varies in porosity. In today’s homes, where stain resistance and low maintenance are often priorities, we strongly recommend sealing your stone surfaces.

We primarily use sealants from Fila’s professional range and work closely with Fila to ensure we maintain the highest standards of technical knowledge and support. It is crucial to follow best practices during installation, tiles must be thoroughly cleaned and completely dry before each stage of the sealing process. This prevents any building residue or marks from being trapped beneath the sealant, which can be difficult to remove once sealed.

The geological complexity of stone results in natural variation from tile to tile; this is why all natural products exhibit their own individual characteristics. Whilst we work closely with suppliers to select our stone and take great care to show representative displays, images and samples, a degree of natural variation is beyond our control and will inevitably occur. This is one of the defining characteristics of natural stone and a major contributing factor to its beauty.

To help appreciate the extent of any variation, it is important that you view as much stone as possible before placing your order and ensure enough stone is ordered, including extra, as subsequent orders may be subject to batch variation. On a final note you must ensure your stone installer blends the tiles prior to fixing, so that the full spectrum of shades within your consignment is distributed evenly.

Natural stone stands out for its timeless beauty and distinctive character, with each piece showcasing unique patterns, colours, and textures that can’t be exactly duplicated by synthetic materials. This natural variation adds depth and elegance to any space, giving it a one-of-a-kind look. In addition to its aesthetic appeal, natural stone is incredibly durable and long-lasting, able to withstand heavy use and resist wear better than many man-made alternatives. It’s also a sustainable choice, as it’s sourced directly from the earth without extensive chemical processing, making it more eco-friendly.

Natural stone’s versatility allows it to be used in a wide range of applications, from flooring and countertops to walls and outdoor patios, enhancing both residential and commercial spaces. Furthermore, its classic appeal often increases property value, making it a smart investment for homeowners looking to combine luxury with practicality.

The majority of our natural stone materials fall into the category of medium to high porosity. These include tumbled, honed, or brushed finishes of Limestone, Marble, and Travertine. For these, a two-step sealing process is recommended to ensure optimal protection:

  1. Base Sealant: A penetrating sealant is first applied to absorb into the body of the stone and reduce its porosity. This is essential for preventing moisture and staining. Depending on the stone and conditions, either a solvent-based or water-based sealant may be used, however, these two types should never be mixed.

  2. Surface Wax: After the base sealant, a liquid surface wax is applied to give a light finish and add an extra protective layer.

For more porous materials, we recommend Fila MP90 Eco Xtreme, a high-performance, water-based sealant suitable for deeper absorption. Once the stone has been fixed and cleaned using a diluted solution of Fila Cleaner Pro, and is completely dry, a single coat of the base sealant should be applied before grouting. This step prevents grout residues or pigments from adhering to or staining the stone.

When choosing tiles for your home or project, the finish plays a key role in defining both the look and functionality of the surface. Each type of finish, whether smooth and glossy or rustic and textured, offers its own unique aesthetic and practical benefits. From the high-gloss elegance of polished tiles to the natural charm of riven or tumbled finishes, understanding these options helps you select the perfect style to suit your space, lifestyle, and maintenance preferences.

Below is a breakdown of the most common tile finishes and what makes each one distinctive:

Polished: A polished finish is characterised by a shiny, mirror-like surface created through an intensive process of grinding and buffing the tile with progressively finer abrasives. This removes surface imperfections and results in an exceptionally smooth, high-gloss finish that beautifully reflects light. Polishing enhances the tile’s natural colour, veining, and pattern, giving a luxurious and sophisticated appearance. However, because of their glossy surface, polished tiles can be more slippery when wet and may show smudges or scratches more easily than matt finishes, so placement and maintenance should be considered carefully.

Tumbled: Tumbled tiles undergo a special finishing process designed to create an aged, weathered appearance. The tiles are placed in a drum with abrasive materials like sand, grit, or small stones and gently tumbled until their edges are softened and surfaces worn. The result is a rustic, textured finish with rounded corners and subtle surface variations, giving each tile a unique, old-world charm, perfect for creating a natural, organic look.

Riven: A riven finish is formed when stone is split along its natural layers, producing a textured surface with ridges, grooves, and natural variations that reflect the stone’s geological character. Commonly used for slate and other layered stones, riven finishes have a raw, rustic appearance and offer excellent slip resistance, making them ideal for outdoor spaces or interiors with a rugged, earthy aesthetic.

Honed: A honed finish features a smooth, matt surface achieved by grinding and buffing with fine abrasives. Unlike polished tiles, honed tiles have a soft, satin-like sheen that gives a subtle and elegant look. They are smooth to the touch but less reflective, offering a contemporary, understated aesthetic. Honed tiles are also more slip resistant and less prone to showing scratches or water spots, making them a practical yet stylish choice.

Brushed: A brushed finish is created by treating the surface of natural stone with steel or hard nylon brushes. This gently wears the surface, producing a smooth yet textured finish that retains the stone’s natural character. The brushing process softens sharp edges, enhances colour, and brings out veining and patterns, giving the tile a refined, slightly weathered look. The result is a finish that blends elegance with rustic charm.

Provence: Provence is a broad term which encompasses various finishing methods used to achieve a traditional antique floor effect. Each piece of stone is finished by hand; some pieces will have a soft stippled surface, whereas others will have smooth undulations or pillowed edges. These finishes generally create the most authentic looking time-worn floors.

Heritage: This finish offers a soft tumbled and sandblasted finish which gives a perfectly time-worn aesthetic. The addition of the sandblasting creates a durable stone that is a pale cream shade rather than the usual deeper and more sandy tone. The sandblasting process also produces a light texture to the surface revealing characterful pits where shells once were.

Walls, on tile joints, and even stone coverings can be attacked by mould, especially in humid areas like the bathroom and shower. To safeguard the hygiene of your home and the health of your family, it is essential that you eliminate all traces of mould from stone coverings and prevent it forming again. Spray Fila Algacid Active directly onto the surface, leave to act for 15 minutes, then wipe off with a damp sponge.

Each tile finish offers different benefits and considerations for bathroom use:

  • Polished: Polished tiles can be used in bathrooms, but they are generally not recommended for floors due to their slippery surface when wet. Their high-gloss finish adds a luxurious and reflective appearance, making them ideal for walls, vanity backsplashes, or shower surrounds where they won’t pose a slip risk.

  • Tumbled: Tumbled tiles are an excellent choice for bathroom floors, shower enclosures, and walls. Their naturally textured and slightly uneven surface provides superior slip resistance, making them a safe option for wet environments. Aesthetically, they bring a rustic, weathered charm that suits traditional, Mediterranean, or vintage-inspired designs.

  • Honed Tiles: Honed feature a smooth, matte surface that provides a good balance between style and safety. Without a glossy finish, they offer enhanced slip resistance compared to polished tiles, making them ideal for bathroom floors and other moisture-prone areas. They deliver a subtle, elegant look that complements both modern and classic interiors.

  • Brushed Tiles:
Brushed tiles offer moderate slip resistance, combining smoothness with enough texture for safe use in bathrooms, kitchens, and utility rooms. While not as grippy as heavily textured tiles, they perform well when properly maintained and kept dry. Their finish provides a refined yet practical appearance suited to everyday use.

In summary for bathroom floors, tumbled and honed tiles are the safest and most practical choices due to their slip resistance. Brushed tiles are also suitable with mindful maintenance, while polished tiles are best reserved for walls or decorative areas where water exposure is minimal.

After the grout has fully dried, it’s important to clean the tiles again using diluted Fila Cleaner Pro. This step removes any residual grout polymers that could interfere with the sealant’s ability to absorb into the stone. Once the surface is completely clean and dry, apply 1 to 3 coats of Fila MP90 Eco Xtreme, depending on the stone’s porosity and the desired level of protection. Any excess sealant must be removed immediately to prevent streaking. Don’t forget to seal the grout joints at this stage to protect them from moisture and staining.

Once the base sealing is complete, a liquid wax surface sealant should be applied to enhance resistance to daily dirt and wear. Apply two coats, with the second applied at 90° to the first for even coverage. Finish options include:

  • Fila Matt – for a natural, matt finish

  • Fila Satin – for a subtle satin sheen (most popular choice)

  • Fila Long Life – for a durable, glossy finish

This final layer not only enhances the appearance of the stone but also adds a valuable barrier against everyday grime.

Coloured stains from substances like coffee, wine, fruit juice, hair dye, ink, or felt-tip pens can be effectively removed using SR95. This product is specially formulated to eliminate stains from natural stone, marble, porcelain, concrete, and polished agglomerates, without damaging the material or its finish, even on low-absorbency ceramics.

Opaque or dull marks, often caused by acidic substances such as vinegar, lemon, cola, wine, or scale removers, can damage the polished surface of marble and other natural stones. Light damage may make the surface appear matt or dull under certain light, while more severe damage can leave white, rough-feeling stains. For restoring these etched or dulled areas, particularly on small surfaces like countertops, windowsills, or vanities, the MARBLE RESTORER kit is recommended to revive the shine and smooth finish.

Dirt naturally accumulates in the joints, turning them black and unhygienic. To clean the joints in stone surfaces, we recommend using a non-aggressive alkaline product like PS87 PRO diluted 1:5-1:10 (1 litre of product per 5-10 litres of hot or lukewarm water), using a brush to remove the dirt. Rinse abundantly. Once the surface is dry and clean, you can finish off the stain protection treatment with the product most suited to the type of natural stone in question.

Many natural stones are highly durable and capable of withstanding daily wear, heat, and exposure to the elements. When properly sealed and cared for, natural stone surfaces can maintain their strength and appearance for decades, often lasting a lifetime or more. Their resilience makes them suitable for a variety of applications, both indoors and outdoors, including flooring, countertops, and exterior cladding. However, durability can vary depending on the type of stone and how well it is maintained, so following recommended sealing and cleaning practices is key to preserving its longevity.

Sealing natural stone used externally is a personal choice and a topic of ongoing debate. Outdoor stone surfaces are exposed to atmospheric elements, moisture, and organic matter, all of which can cause staining or alter the appearance of the material over time.

While sealing can help protect against water ingress and staining, some people prefer to let the stone weather naturally, allowing it to develop a patina over time.

Two main factors should be considered:

  • Type of stone: Lighter stones like off-white limestone are more prone to visible staining and generally benefit more from sealing, whereas darker, more rustic stones like sandstone or slate may be left untreated with fewer aesthetic concerns.

  • Scale of the area: Sealing large external areas can be more costly, so it’s important to weigh the practical benefits against the expense.

If you choose to seal, we recommend applying 1–2 coats of Fila MP90 Eco Xtreme, depending on the stone’s porosity, for effective outdoor protection.

Ultimately, the decision comes down to your preferences and how you want the stone to age in your environment.

Wet areas are exposed to more intense and prolonged moisture, so they require enhanced sealing to ensure lasting protection. In these settings, we recommend applying multiple coats of Fila MP90 Eco Xtreme, a deep-penetrating water-based sealant that helps protect the stone from water ingress and staining.

A liquid surface wax should not be used in wet areas. Prolonged exposure to moisture can cause surface waxes to become cloudy or degrade over time, compromising both the appearance and the protection of the surface.

For best results, speak to our team to determine the right number of base sealant coats for your specific installation.

Natural stone is often used outdoors. In these conditions, rust and sulphate stains are common. For small rust stains, use no rust stain remover which, with its non-acidic formulation, is particularly suited to delicate surfaces like polished marble (internally). Its gel-like consistency means that it acts directly on the stain without wastage, and reduces the risk of contact with grass and plants in the vicinity of the affected area. Completely cover the stain with the stain remover. Leave it for 15 minutes, then remove the residue and rinse thoroughly. Please note – the reaction between the product and the rust will show a purple solution which will be wiped off after 15 mins. Any purple haze from this process will dissipate naturally with weathering as time passes.

Yes, natural stone is considered a sustainable and eco-friendly building material. Its production doesn’t rely on harmful chemicals or intensive manufacturing processes, which helps reduce environmental impact. Natural stone is extremely durable and has a long lifecycle, meaning it can last for decades or even centuries with proper care, reducing the need for frequent replacement. Additionally, many natural stone products can be reclaimed or recycled, further minimising waste. Today, many quarries and suppliers also follow environmentally responsible practices, such as land rehabilitation and efficient resource management, making natural stone a thoughtful choice for sustainable building and design.

Porcelain

Porcelain is a type of ceramic fired at extremely high temperatures, making it incredibly dense and hard-wearing with almost no absorption. Porcelain tiles can be either full-bodied, where the colour or pattern runs through the entire tile, or glazed, where the design is applied only to the surface.

These tiles can mimic the appearance of materials like wood, stone, or metal, or feature intricate patterns and designs. However, due to the way porcelain tiles are produced, there may be slight variations in size or colour between different batches. For this reason, it’s recommended not to mix tiles from different batches to ensure a consistent look.

Porcelain or Decorative & Glazed tiles themselves do not require sealing; however, if using a cementitious/porous grout, this grout should be protected with a coat of Fila Fugaproof. Porcelain tiles should also be cleaned as part of the installation process with dilute Fila Cleaner Pro. Any more stubborn marks may require the use of Fila Deterdek Pro but please check with a member of staff before committing to use.

When ordering porcelain tiles in large quantities, it’s important to understand that due to the manufacturing process, all tile sizing is nominal, and slight variations in dimensions can occur. While usually minimal, this variation can be more noticeable with larger format tiles. For this reason, we strongly recommend ordering enough tiles in one batch to complete your project, as differences in shade and size may occur between separate batches.

Additionally, during the firing process, porcelain tiles can experience slight bowing or warping. To minimise the visual impact of this, especially with larger tiles, avoid installing them in a traditional brick-bond pattern. Instead, stagger the tiles by no more than 20–30% of their length. Using tile levelling systems such as the RLS clips (available from us) can also help achieve a smoother, more even finish.

Yes, porcelain tiles are a great option for outdoor use. They’re durable, weather-resistant, and can handle temperature changes, making them suitable for patios, walkways, and other exterior areas. Just make sure to choose porcelain tiles that are specifically rated for outdoor use, as these will have the right slip resistance and strength to withstand outdoor conditions safely.

Cleaning porcelain tiles is pretty straightforward. Start by sweeping or vacuuming regularly to get rid of dust, dirt, and debris. When it’s time to mop, use warm water combined with a mild, gentle cleaner; avoid anything too harsh or abrasive that might damage the tile’s surface. After cleaning, be sure to rinse the tiles well with clean water and dry them with a soft cloth or mop to prevent water spots and keep your tiles looking fresh.

Yes, porcelain is an excellent choice for families with children or pets. Its scratch-resistant and hardwearing surface makes it ideal for withstanding the daily wear and tear of active households, including toys, claws, and high foot traffic. Porcelain is also incredibly easy to clean; dirt, spills, and pet accidents can be quickly wiped away without staining or damaging the surface. Thanks to its low porosity, it resists moisture absorption, which helps prevent odours and bacteria buildup, making it a hygienic and practical flooring solution for busy family environments.

Large format porcelain tiles are oversized tiles that offer a sleek and modern aesthetic by minimising grout lines, which creates a more seamless and elegant look. Their generous size not only enhances the visual appeal of floors and walls but also makes cleaning and maintenance easier due to fewer grout joints. These tiles are ideal for creating the illusion of larger, more open spaces, making rooms feel brighter and more spacious. Durable and versatile, large format porcelain tiles are a popular choice in contemporary interiors for achieving a sophisticated and stylish finish.

Our porcelain finishes include Satin, Honed, Brushed, Gloss, and Matt, offering a variety of options to enhance the aesthetic and functionality of your spaces.

  • Honed -With a smooth, matt surface, the honed finish provides a more natural, stone-like feel. It’s durable and slip resistant, making it an excellent choice for both indoor and outdoor applications. Honed porcelain is perfect for creating a timeless, minimalist look.

  • Brushed – Featuring subtle textures that add depth and character, the brushed porcelain finish is ideal for creating a rustic or industrial-inspired design. Its tactile surface provides both visual interest and practicality, especially in high traffic areas.

  • Gloss – For a bold and sleek appearance, the gloss finish offers a reflective surface that brings light and brightness to your space. It’s perfect for modern interiors, providing a clean, polished look that’s easy to maintain and enhances the vibrancy of any room.

  • Matt – The matt finish delivers a soft, non-reflective surface that’s easy to clean and maintain. Ideal for creating a calming, understated ambiance, it’s great for both floors and walls, offering a modern and durable solution that fits a wide range of interior styles.

Porcelain is a popular choice because it offers exceptional durability and water resistance, making it suitable for a wide range of environments, including high-traffic areas and wet spaces like bathrooms and kitchens. It is also incredibly versatile in design, capable of mimicking the appearance of natural materials such as stone, wood, or concrete with stunning realism, allowing you to achieve a high-end look without the drawbacks of those materials.

Additionally, porcelain typically requires less maintenance and is more cost-effective over time compared to natural stone or hardwood, as it doesn’t need sealing and is highly resistant to stains, scratches, and fading. This combination of strength, beauty, and practicality makes porcelain a smart and stylish choice for many homes and commercial spaces.

Absolutely. Porcelain tile is known for being low-maintenance and highly durable. Unlike natural stone, it is non-porous, which means it doesn’t require sealing to protect it from moisture or stains. Regular sweeping or vacuuming to remove dust and debris, combined with damp mopping using a mild detergent or pH-neutral cleaner, is usually all that’s needed to keep porcelain tiles looking clean and fresh. Its resistance to water, stains, and wear makes it an ideal choice for high-traffic areas in both residential and commercial spaces.

Porcelain tiles can be slip resistant, but it largely depends on their finish and texture. Smooth, glossy porcelain tiles tend to be more slippery, especially when wet, because their polished surface offers less friction underfoot. This makes them less ideal for areas prone to moisture, like bathrooms or outdoor walkways.

On the other hand, porcelain tiles with a textured, matt finish are designed to provide better grip and reduce the risk of slipping. These tiles have a rougher surface that increases friction, making them safer for wet or high-traffic areas.

Dirt naturally accumulates in the joints between tiles, turning them black and unhygienic. To clean floor joints, we recommend using a non-aggressive alkaline product like PS87 PRO diluted 1:5-1:10 (1 litre of product per 5-10 litres of hot or lukewarm water), using a brush to remove the dirt. Rinse abundantly. If the joints are heavily soiled, wash with DETERDEK PRO diluted 1:10 (1 litre of product per 10 litres of hot or lukewarm water), using a brush. Rinse abundantly after treatment. Once the surface is dry and clean, you can protect the joints with FUGAPROOF eco-friendly stain protector

Porcelain floor are very popular because they are easy to keep clean, but they can easily get stained if not cleaned properly. One of the most common problems with new porcelain tile floors is the appearance, shortly after laying, of stains or, what is worse, shoe prints which can be seen against the light and cannot be removed even by washing the floor. This is usually due to the presence of concrete and grout residue on the surface. This residue forms an even surface film which does not appear as “dirt” but is sensitive to acid substances. Immediately after the floor is laid, it is important to wash the floor with a specifically designed detergent like DETERDEK PRO to remove all residue of grout, mortar and glue. This can also be done by the home owner.

Rectified porcelain tiles are tiles that get trimmed or smoothed after they’re made to make sure all the edges are super straight and even. Because of that, they fit together really nicely with very thin grout lines, giving your floor or wall a clean, sleek look.

They’re great if you want a modern, polished vibe. Regular tiles usually have slightly uneven edges, so you need wider grout lines to make everything fit right.

So basically, rectified tiles help you get that neat, seamless finish.

Ceramic

Ceramic is not only the blanket term for any product made from clay and fired in a kiln to harden, but also the term for tiles which are fired at lower temperatures than porcelain and have greater water absorption. These ceramic tiles are usually glazed with either high-gloss, colourful or patterned surfaces and usually for wall use only, although some ceramics can be used for flooring.

Ceramic tiles are a popular choice due to their durability and longevity. When properly maintained, they can last for many years, making them a cost-effective option for a variety of spaces. Their water-resistant nature and ease of cleaning make ceramic tiles particularly suitable for areas prone to moisture, such as bathrooms, kitchens, and laundry rooms. Additionally, ceramic tiles come in a wide range of colours, patterns, and finishes, allowing for great versatility in design.

However, there are some important factors to keep in mind. Ceramic tiles can be prone to cracking or chipping if subjected to heavy impact, so it’s essential to consider the level of foot traffic and potential hazards in the installation area. Another consideration is that matching replacement tiles can sometimes be challenging, especially if the original tiles are discontinued or from a limited batch.

For glazed ceramic tiles, while they offer a beautiful and glossy finish, they can become slippery when wet. This makes them less ideal for wet rooms or areas where slip resistance is critical. If you are thinking of using ceramic tiles in such spaces, it’s advisable to seek expert advice on slip-resistant options or alternative materials.

Ceramic tiles themselves are water resistant, making them a popular choice for wet areas like bathrooms and kitchens. However, the grout lines between the tiles are porous and not inherently waterproof. To prevent water from seeping through these gaps, it’s important to properly seal the grout during installation and maintain that seal over time. Additionally, having a good waterproof membrane or layer beneath the tiles provides an extra level of protection against water infiltration. With proper installation and maintenance, ceramic tile surfaces can effectively resist moisture and help protect your walls and floors from water damage.

Ceramic tiles are a versatile and stylish choice, perfect for feature walls, kitchen backsplashes, fireplace surrounds, and bathroom walls. Their wide range of colours, textures, and finishes allows you to add depth, character, and personality to any space. Whether you’re aiming for a bold statement or subtle elegance, ceramic provides design flexibility to suit your vision. Beyond their visual appeal, ceramic tiles are easy to clean, resistant to moisture, and require minimal maintenance, making them both a practical and beautiful option for everyday living.

Yes, ceramic tile can significantly enhance your home’s appeal. Its clean, polished look gives any space an updated, stylish feel that resonates with today’s design trends. It’s highly durable and easy to maintain, features that are attractive to both potential buyers and design-savvy guests. By combining style with practicality, ceramic tile not only improves the look of your home but also makes it more desirable in the eyes of future homeowners.

Ceramic tiles are easy to maintain using warm water and a mild detergent for regular cleaning. Avoid acidic or abrasive cleaners, as they can damage the tile’s glaze and dull its finish. For stubborn stains, gently scrub with a soft brush and a pH-neutral cleaner. After cleaning, rinse thoroughly with water and dry with a soft cloth to prevent water spots. Following these steps will help keep your ceramic tiles looking great for years.

Absolutely! Ceramic tiles are an excellent choice for kitchens due to their durability, ease of cleaning, and resistance to moisture and stains. These qualities make ceramic tiles ideal for a variety of kitchen surfaces, including backsplashes, and floors. They can withstand daily wear and tear from cooking, spills, and foot traffic without losing their appearance.

Our ceramic tile range features 4 finishes, Gloss, Grooved, Matt, and Satin. Each offering unique textures and appearances to suit a variety of design preferences and functional needs.

  • Gloss:  provides a high shine, reflective surface that brightens and enhances spaces, ideal for kitchens and bathrooms due to their smooth, easy to clean finish.
  • Grooved: features textured lines /patterns that add depth and visual interest, offering slip resistance for high traffic or wet areas like showers and entryways.
  • Matt: offers a non-reflective, understated finish that creates a calm atmosphere while being low maintenance and perfect for spaces like living rooms and bedrooms.
  • Satin: combines a soft sheen with practicality, offering a refined and elegant look that works well in both modern and traditional interiors.

The main difference between glazed and unglazed ceramic tiles lies in their surface treatment and resulting appearance and performance.

Glazed tiles are coated with a layer of liquid glass and then fired in a kiln. This glazing process creates a protective barrier that makes the tile more resistant to stains and moisture. Contrary to popular belief, “glazed” does not refer to the tile’s finish, glazed tiles can have either a glossy or a matt surface, offering a wide range of design options.

Unglazed tiles, on the other hand, are fired without the glass coating. This results in a more natural, earthy look with subtle colour variations and a slightly rougher texture. The textured surface typically provides better slip resistance, making unglazed tiles a popular choice for outdoor areas or high-traffic spaces.

In summary, glazed ceramic tiles offer enhanced stain and moisture resistance with more colour and finish options, while unglazed deliver a raw, organic appearance and improved traction. The choice depends on your aesthetic preferences and where the tiles will be used.

When choosing between glazed and unglazed ceramic tiles, it’s important to understand the key differences in performance, appearance, and suitability for your space.

Unglazed ceramic tiles are generally more durable and dense, making them ideal for high-traffic areas and commercial settings. Their textured, slip-resistant surface offers added safety in wet areas, and since the colour runs through the entire tile, chips and scratches are less noticeable. This durability also contributes to a longer lifespan and reduced environmental impact. However, unglazed tiles typically come in more limited, earthy tones and their porous surface can make them harder to clean and more prone to staining—especially in areas exposed to spills or heavy wear.

Glazed ceramic tiles, on the other hand, offer a much wider variety of colours, finishes, and patterns, making them highly versatile for different design aesthetics. The glazed surface is easy to clean and provides good stain resistance. However, glazed tiles can be slippery when wet and may chip over time, especially in high-wear areas. They are generally less durable than unglazed tiles in outdoor or demanding environments.

By weighing these factors, you can select the tile type that best suits your practical needs and design goals.

Yes, ceramic tiles are heat resistant, which makes them an excellent choice for areas exposed to high temperatures. They can safely be used in kitchens, around fireplaces, and near stoves without risk of damage from heat. This resistance helps protect surfaces from burns or warping that might occur with other materials. Additionally, ceramic tiles retain heat well, making them practical and stylish for both functional and decorative applications in heat-prone areas.

Crazing on ceramic tiles refers to the appearance of hairline cracks on the glazed surface. These cracks are typically very small and do not penetrate through the body of the tile, but they create a network of visible lines. Crazing can happen for various reasons and times: for example, temperature change, straight out of the kiln, during or after installation. Sometimes, crazing might never occur.

To remove coloured stains (coffee, wine, fruit juice, hair dye, ink, felt tip pens, etc.) from porcelain surfaces, you can use SR95 stain remover. SR95 completely removes stains which normal cleaning agents have no effect on. It is specifically designed for removing stains on natural stone (marble, travertine, agglomerate) and can also be used on polished stone without affecting its finish. it is also ideally suited for cleaning low absorption ceramic surfaces like porcelain and single-fired tiles with a rough surface.

Marble

The term marble has traditionally been used to describe any natural stone with a polished finish applied to it, however geologically speaking marble is a limestone which has been subjected to thermal metamorphism.

This process which takes place deep below the earth’s surface leads to a dense stone with a closed surface. Marble is a beautiful, striking and diverse material which can be pure white through to blue, green or purple, usually interlaced with contrasting mineral veins, marble has been used as a hard wearing surface or as striking, feature pieces for millennia. The dense nature of this material can lead to surface pits, something which should be expected but does not detract from the beauty of the product. It is not unusual for there to be a degree of resin fill to the surface of a marble, usually in more prominent or open veins.

Yes, marble is safe for food preparation when it is properly sealed and maintained. Its naturally cool surface makes it a favourite among bakers and chefs, especially for tasks like  working with pastry, as it helps keep ingredients at an ideal temperature. However, marble is a porous and acid-sensitive stone, so it’s important to avoid letting acidic foods, such as lemon juice, vinegar, or tomato sauce, sit on the surface for extended periods, as these can cause etching or dull spots. Regular sealing helps protect the marble from stains and damage, making it a practical and elegant choice for kitchen countertops and food preparation areas.

Marble is a timeless and elegant choice for bathroom floors, walls, and countertops, offering a luxurious natural look. However, because marble is a porous material, it requires proper sealing to protect against moisture, stains, and spills. Using a high-quality sealer is essential to maintain both its appearance and longevity in a bathroom setting.

One key consideration when using marble in wet areas is slip resistance. Polished marble tiles can be particularly slippery when wet, making them less suitable for bathroom floors or other high-moisture environments. To improve safety, it’s recommended to choose a honed or tumbled finish, which offers a more textured surface and better grip underfoot, while still showcasing the natural beauty of the stone.

With the right finish and proper sealing, marble tiles can be a stunning and practical option for bathrooms. Just be sure to factor in maintenance and finish type to ensure the space is both safe and stylish.

When choosing marble tiles, there are several important factors to keep in mind. Marble offers a timeless, luxurious look that enhances the beauty and elegance of any space. It is available in a variety of colours, thicknesses, and sizes, allowing you to select the perfect style to suit your design preferences. Additionally, marble features unique veining, patterns, and sometimes quartzite detailing, which adds natural character and depth to your installation.

Marble is naturally heat resistant, making it an excellent choice for kitchens, fireplaces, and other areas exposed to warmth. When properly maintained and sealed, marble is durable and can last for many years, standing up well to everyday wear and tear. This makes it a worthwhile investment for long-term use.

However, because marble is a porous material, it can absorb liquids such as water, oils, and other substances, which may cause staining if not sealed properly. It’s important to apply a high-quality sealant and clean spills promptly to protect the surface. While marble is relatively durable, it is softer than some other natural stones like granite, meaning it can scratch more easily. Sharp objects, heavy furniture, or abrasive cleaning tools can leave marks or dull the finish, so it’s important to handle the surface with care.

Overall, considering both its aesthetic qualities and maintenance needs will help ensure that marble tiles are the right choice for your project.

Marble is considered a premium material that can boost a home’s value. Its timeless beauty and durability bring a sense of luxury and elegance to any space, making it highly attractive to homeowners and buyers. Marble surfaces in kitchens, bathrooms, or flooring create a sophisticated atmosphere that enhances the overall appeal of a property. Because of its association with high-end design, marble often contributes to a higher resale value, making it a worthwhile investment for many homeowners.

Etching occurs when acidic substances, such as lemon juice, vinegar, or certain cleaners react with the calcium carbonate in marble, leaving dull spots or marks. To prevent etching, always clean up spills immediately. You can also apply a protective sealant to marble surfaces to reduce the risk.

You might spot tiny hairline cracks before or after installation and think they’re defects. However, because of marble’s natural structure and veining, it can form inherent fissures. These are not defects, though they may be visible on the polished surface. In most cases, fissures do not impact the stone’s strength and will not grow or deteriorate over time.

As marble tiles are a natural stone, each tile will consist of a variation of veins, shades & characteristics. Whilst we work closely with suppliers to select our stone and take great care to show representative displays, images and samples, a degree of natural variation is beyond our control and will inevitably occur. This is one of the defining characteristics of natural stone and a major contributing factor to its beauty.

Our marble finishes include honed, polished, and tumbled, each offering unique characteristics to suit a variety of design preferences and functional needs.

  • Honed – features a smooth, matt surface that offers a more subtle and sophisticated look, making it perfect for contemporary interiors. Its soft finish reduces glare and is ideal for high-traffic areas like kitchens and bathrooms, where durability is key.
  • Polished – provides a glossy, high shine surface that highlights the natural veining and intricate patterns of the stone, giving spaces an elegant and luxurious feel. It’s often chosen for statement pieces such as countertops, flooring, and feature walls.
  • Tumbled -offers a weathered, rustic charm with a textured surface, making it a popular choice for outdoor applications or traditional and vintage inspired interiors. Whether you’re looking for a sleek, modern aesthetic or a timeless, rustic touch, our range of marble finishes ensures there’s a perfect option for every design style.

White marble tiles are highly versatile and can be used in a variety of spaces throughout the home. Their bright, luminous appearance helps reflect light, making rooms feel larger and more open, an ideal choice for smaller areas or spaces with limited natural light. White marble is often used to create classic chequerboard patterns, especially in hallways, kitchens, and bathrooms, adding a timeless and elegant touch.

Beyond floors, white marble tiles work well for backsplashes, and even fireplace surrounds, bringing a clean and sophisticated look to any room. Whether you prefer a sleek, minimalist design or a more traditional aesthetic, white marble provides a versatile and stylish foundation that complements a wide range of interiors.

Marble tiles require a bit more maintenance than some other materials, but with the right care, they can retain their beauty for years. Regular sealing is essential, especially in high-moisture areas like bathrooms or kitchens, as marble is porous and can absorb water, oils, and other liquids that may lead to staining.

For routine cleaning, use a soft cloth or mop and a pH-neutral cleaner specifically designed for natural stone. Avoid acidic or abrasive cleaners, such as vinegar, lemon juice, bleach, or general household products, as these can damage the marble’s surface and cause etching. Always clean up spills as soon as possible, particularly those from acidic substances like wine, citrus, or coffee.

Dust or sweep regularly to prevent dirt and grit from scratching the surface, and use mats or rugs in high-traffic areas for added protection. With consistent care and the right products, marble tiles can maintain their elegant finish and remain a standout feature in your home.

Limestone

Classified as a sedimentary rock, limestone is formed by the accumulation of fine sediments, seashells and other organic matter deposited over millions of years. Limestone is used to create beautiful and unique wall and floor tiles, which vary a great deal in density, colour, finish and overall look. Some degree of edge chipping may occur to the edges of limestone tiles along with occasional surface pitting, mineral veining, fissures, striations and resin fill.

Limestone tiles are a timeless choice that bring a warm, organic feel to any space. With their soft, earthy tones and subtle natural patterns, they complement both traditional and modern interiors effortlessly. Whether you’re designing a rustic farmhouse kitchen or a sleek contemporary bathroom, limestone adds a refined, upscale aesthetic without feeling cold or overly formal.

Beyond their visual appeal, limestone tiles are known for their durability and versatility. They hold up well in high-traffic areas and can be used on floors, walls, and even outdoor spaces. Their natural texture provides a welcoming, tactile quality underfoot, making them as inviting as they are elegant. If you’re looking for a material that balances beauty, function, and timeless style, limestone is a smart and stylish choice.

Yes, limestone tiles are highly compatible with underfloor heating systems, making them an excellent choice for homes with radiant heating. As a natural stone, limestone has good thermal conductivity; it absorbs heat efficiently and distributes it evenly across the surface. This means your floors warm up quickly and retain heat well, helping to create a comfortable, consistent temperature throughout the room.

In addition to enhancing comfort, limestones energy efficient performance can also help reduce heating costs over time. Just make sure the tiles are installed properly with the right subfloor and adhesive that’s compatible with underfloor heating.

Yes, limestone can be used outdoors and is a popular choice for patios, garden paths, pool surrounds, and other exterior spaces. Its natural texture, earthy tones, and timeless appearance make it a stylish and practical option for outdoor settings. When properly sealed and maintained, outdoor limestone tiles offer good durability and slip resistance.

However, it’s important to note that limestone is sensitive to weathering and may fade or discolour over time when exposed to prolonged sunlight and the elements. Choosing a suitable finish and regularly sealing the tiles will help protect against moisture, staining, and surface wear.

That said, many people choose to leave the stone unsealed and allow it to weather naturally. As this happens, the limestone gains character and develops a unique, aged look that adds charm and authenticity to outdoor spaces.

We offer a wide range of outdoor limestone tiles, available in various finishes and tones to suit both contemporary and traditional designs.

Provence is a broad term that refers to a range of finishing techniques used to recreate the look of traditional, time worn limestone flooring. Each piece is hand finished, resulting in natural variations, some may feature a soft, stippled texture, while others display gentle surface undulations or subtly pillowed edges. The result is an authentic, aged appearance that closely resembles reclaimed stone floors.

Our limestone range offers five stunning finishes to suit a variety of design styles and applications: Honed, Tumbled, Provence, Brushed, and Riven.

  • Honed – features a smooth, matt surface that provides a subtle and sophisticated look, perfect for modern interiors or high-traffic areas like kitchens and bathrooms.
  • Tumbled – offers a textured finish with rounded edges, ideal for both indoor and outdoor spaces that need a weathered, vintage feel.
  • Provence – brings warmth and character, with natural textures that evoke the charm of the French countryside, perfect for creating relaxed, timeless spaces.
  • Brushed – offers a soft, refined texture, making it a versatile option for both contemporary and classic designs, particularly in living rooms, bathrooms, and hallways.
  • Riven features a rugged, uneven surface that creates a bold, natural look; perfect for statement floors, rustic kitchens, or outdoor paving.

Yes, limestone can be used in fireplaces and is a popular choice for its natural, elegant appearance. However, because it’s a softer, more porous stone, it requires proper care in high heat environments. Over time, exposure to heat may cause slight changes in the stone’s colour or texture, these natural variations are typically subtle but worth considering if a uniform look is important to you.

To protect limestone from soot, smoke, and staining, sealing is essential. A good quality sealant helps maintain the stone’s appearance and makes cleaning easier. With proper sealing and maintenance, limestone can be a durable and beautiful option for fireplace surrounds.

Yes, limestone tile ages beautifully over time. As it naturally develops a patina; a thin, surface layer formed through exposure to light, air, and use, it gains depth and character that enhance its overall appearance. This aging process gives each tile a unique, authentic look that many homeowners find highly desirable. Rather than losing its appeal, limestone’s evolving texture and subtle colour changes add warmth and personality to your space, making it a timeless choice that grows more attractive with age.

Limestone tiles are relatively easy to maintain but do require regular and careful cleaning to preserve their natural beauty. As an acid-sensitive material, limestone is vulnerable to damage from harsh or acidic cleaners, which can etch or dull the surface. To avoid this, always use a gentle, pH-neutral stone cleaner specifically designed for natural stone.

For routine maintenance, sweep or vacuum regularly to remove dirt and grit that could scratch the surface. Follow with a mop using warm water and a pH-neutral cleaner, applied with a soft mop or cloth. Avoid using bleach, vinegar, or standard household cleaners, as these can harm the limestone.

We recommend resealing the tiles periodically, depending on the level of use, to help maintain their resistance to stains and moisture. It’s also important to wipe up spills promptly, especially acidic substances like juice or wine, to prevent permanent staining or surface damage.

When choosing limestone tiles, there are several important factors to consider to ensure they meet your needs and are suitable for the intended space.

Limestone is a durable and long-lasting material when properly cared for, making it a great investment for both residential and commercial settings. As a natural stone, it offers an ecofriendly and sustainable flooring option, with each tile featuring unique variations in tone and texture that add natural charm and character.

When sealed correctly, limestone provides a non-slip surface, which makes it ideal for high-traffic areas such as hallways, kitchens, and bathrooms. However, it’s important to keep in mind that limestone is highly porous. If not adequately sealed and maintained, it can absorb liquids easily, leading to stains. It is also sensitive to acidic substances such as vinegar, citrus, wine, and certain cleaning products, which can cause etching or surface damage.

For outdoor applications, consider that prolonged exposure to sunlight may lead to fading or discolouration over time. Selecting the right finish, such as tumbled, honed, or brushed, can also influence the tile’s slip resistance, appearance, and suitability for specific areas.

Overall, think about where the tiles will be used, how much maintenance you’re willing to commit to, and whether the natural aesthetic and performance characteristics of limestone align with your design and lifestyle needs.

Yes, limestone tiles can stain relatively easily because limestone is a naturally porous material. Its surface can absorb liquids such as wine, oil, juice, or even water if left unsealed, leading to discolouration or permanent stains.

To protect the stone and maintain its appearance, it is essential to apply a high-quality penetrating sealer after installation. Regular resealing and prompt cleaning of spills are also important to minimise the risk of staining and keep the tiles looking their best over time.

Terrazzo

Terrazzo is a composite material, poured in place or precast. It has been used for floor and wall coverings for over 500 years. It consists of chips of marble, quartz, granite, glass, or other suitable material, poured with a cementitious binder.

We only recommend using ARDEX FL format grouts that are light in colour, not black or bright coloured grouts as these can cause permanent staining to the surface. If in doubt, please try your chosen grout on a test tile prior to using on the newly tiled area.

Terrazzo tile installation is more complex than porcelain and should always be carried out by an experienced tiler familiar with the specific methods required for installing, sealing, and finishing Terrazzo. These tiles require careful handling and precise preparation to ensure a successful, long-lasting result.

Before grouting, it is essential that the tiles are completely dry and properly sealed to prevent permanent staining. Only light-coloured grouts, such as Ardex Flex FL in pale tones, should be used. Dark or brightly coloured grouts, particularly black, must be avoided, as they can cause irreversible staining to the tile surface. Always test the chosen grout on a spare tile before applying it to the main surface area.

Before grouting, apply PRW200 water-based sealer to the front and sides of each tile. This pre-treatment serves several purposes: it simplifies the grouting process and post-installation cleaning, reduces drying time, and offers protection against grout stains.

Ensure that the surface is thoroughly cleaned and completely dry both before and after applying the sealer to achieve optimal results.

Terrazzo care & maintance | Installion guide

Terrazzo has been around since ancient times and has continuously evolved with changing design trends. Its unique, customisable beauty, combining chips of marble, glass, or other materials in a polished, durable surface, makes it incredibly versatile. Because of this adaptability and its timeless appeal, terrazzo remains a popular choice in both classic and modern interiors. Rather than going out of style, it continues to be celebrated for adding character and elegance to any space.

Yes, it’s recommended to apply a protective sealer like FILA PRW200 before grouting your terrazzo tiles. This product acts as a barrier to prevent grout from penetrating and staining the surface. PRW200 is a non-sacrificial sealer, meaning it won’t interfere with grout adhesion but will make cleaning easier, speed up drying times, and help maintain the tile’s appearance. It’s simple to apply, use it straight from the bottle with a flat brush or sprayer for vertical surfaces. After applying the sealer, you can grout the next day, and if needed, apply additional protective treatments afterward.

After installation, it’s essential to carry out a thorough end-of-work clean using a neutral cleaner, such as Fila Cleaner Pro, to remove grout haze and residue from the tile surface.

For long-term protection and easier ongoing maintenance:

  • Apply a stain-resistant sealer like Fila MP90 Eco Xtreme to reduce the tile’s porosity and protect against staining.

  • For routine cleaning, always use neutral pH cleaners. Avoid acidic, alkaline, or abrasive products, as these can damage the tile’s surface and compromise its finish.

By following these steps, you’ll help ensure your terrazzo tiles retain their original appearance and remain durable for years to come.

Terrazzo tile installation is more complex than porcelain, so it’s essential to use an experienced tiler who understands the correct methods for installation, sealing, and finishing. Improper handling can lead to permanent staining, especially during the grouting phase. To ensure the best outcome:

  • Tiles must be completely dry and properly sealed before grouting.

  • Pre-grouting treatment with a water-based sealer like PRW200 should be applied to the front and sides of the tiles to ease cleaning and protect against grout stains.

  • Use light coloured Ardex Flex FL grouts. Avoid black or bright colours, as these may permanently stain the surface.

  • Always test grout on a spare tile before applying it across the entire area.

The strength and durability of terrazzo make it ideal for spaces that experience a lot of foot traffic. Their dense, hard surface can withstand heavy footfall and resist wear over time. In addition to being tough, terrazzo is also easy to clean and maintain, which is a big advantage in busy commercial environments where hygiene and appearance are important. Plus, terrazzo’s versatility in design allows it to be customised to suit the aesthetic of virtually any space, combining functionality with style.

Mosaics

Mosaics are created by assembling small pieces of materials, such as stone and porcelain. The pieces, often called tesserae, are arranged closely together to form a larger picture or design. The beauty of mosaics comes from how the small individual pieces, when viewed from a distance, come together to create a striking, cohesive image.

Stone and porcelain mosaics are supplied with either a mesh backing or in some cases, a plastic covering to the face of the mosaic. These coverings are designed to hold the mosaic pieces in place during transport and installation only, over-handling may lead to the chips loosening or becoming dislodged completely.

Installing mosaic tiles can be more challenging than larger tiles because of their small size and detailed patterns. However, with proper preparation and attention to detail, both professionals and DIY enthusiasts can successfully install them.

Cleaning mosaic tiles largely depends on the material. For most types of tiles, regular sweeping and mopping with a mild, non-abrasive cleaner are sufficient to maintain their appearance. However, marble mosaics require a bit more attention. They should be sealed periodically to protect against stains and moisture, as marble is more porous than other materials. Sealing helps preserve the tiles beauty and ensures long-lasting durability.

Sandstone

Sandstone tiles are natural stone tiles made from coarse-grained, durable sandstone. Known for their strength and weather resistance, they have traditionally been used for outdoor applications such as patios and terraces. These tiles often feature a riven finish, which gives the surface a textured, uneven appearance, along with hand-chipped edges that enhance their rustic and natural look.

With proper care and sealing, sandstone tiles are strong and long-lasting. They’re built to handle foot traffic and weather beautifully, making them a dependable option for years to come.

Natural sandstone is generally UV-resistant, meaning it holds up well under sunlight without significant damage. However, in areas with intense or prolonged sun exposure, some gradual fading or lightening of the colour can occur over time. This is a natural process and doesn’t affect the strength or durability of the stone. In fact, many homeowners appreciate the gentle weathering and softening of colour, as it adds to the stone’s rustic charm and blends beautifully with outdoor surroundings. Regular sealing can also help slow down the fading process and maintain the tile’s original appearance longer.

Not typically. One of sandstone’s key advantages is its naturally textured surface, which offers more grip than many polished or honed stones. This makes it a safer choice for areas that may get wet. Finishes like riven sandstone enhance this slip resistance even further, making it ideal for outdoor and high-moisture environments.

Sandstone is an excellent choice for outdoor applications due to its natural slip resistance and ability to withstand sunlight and heat. It blends well with landscapes and is often used in garden paths, patios, and pool surrounds.

We offer Riven Sandstone, which features a naturally cleft surface that showcases its rustic charm. This finish includes characteristic chips and chisel marks on some surfaces, adding texture and individuality to each tile. Suitable for both indoor and outdoor use, Riven Sandstone is a versatile and durable option for various design styles.

Slate

Slate tiles are a fine grained metamorphic rock that is known for its durability, versatility, and unique appearance. Slate forms through the compression of clay and volcanic ash over millions of years, which gives it its distinctive layers and texture. Slate tiles are typically cut into thin, flat pieces and are widely used for both flooring and wall applications

Absolutely, slate is an excellent choice for spaces like bathrooms, kitchens, and even outdoor areas. Its natural resistance to moisture and durability make it well suited to handle the demands of these environments. However, to ensure slate performs at its best and maintains its appearance over time, it’s important to apply a proper sealant. Sealing helps prevent water absorption, staining, and potential damage from prolonged exposure to moisture. With the right care and maintenance, slate tiles can provide both beauty and functionality in even the most moisture-prone areas of your home.

Slate is a smart long-term investment because of its durability, aesthetic appeal, eco-friendliness, and ability to increase your property’s resale value. Its natural strength means it lasts for decades without needing frequent repairs, saving you money over time. Being a natural, sustainable material, it’s also an environmentally responsible choice. Plus, homes with slate features often attract buyers and can sell for more, making it a valuable addition to your property’s future comfort and style.

We offer Riven Slate, known for its naturally cleft surface that exudes rustic charm. With distinctive chips and chisel marks on some surfaces, this slate brings a unique, textured look to any space. Ideal for both interior and exterior applications, Riven Slate combines durability with aesthetic appeal, making it a versatile choice for various design projects.

This material, amongst the most porous of natural stones, is within our external range but can be used internally. If fitting internally, a thorough application of base sealant is required to ensure that it is as protected as possible. After fixing and before grouting, 1-2 coats of Fila MP90 Eco Xtreme should be applied.

After grouting, several more coats of base sealant should be applied to ensure sufficient protection. After the base sealant, 2 coats of Fila Long Life should be applied to the surface.

If fixing externally, the material can either be left unsealed and allowed to weather naturally or sealed to offer protection. If the decision is made to seal, then multiple coats of Fila MP90 Eco Xtreme should be applied.

Slate is an excellent flooring option due to its natural durability, slip resistance, and distinctive appearance. As a dense, hard-wearing stone, it can handle heavy foot traffic, making it ideal for high-use areas like kitchens, hallways, and entryways. Its naturally textured surface provides good traction, helping to reduce the risk of slipping, even when wet, an advantage in both indoor and outdoor settings.

Visually, slate offers a rich, earthy aesthetic with unique colour variations and surface patterns that bring depth and character to any space. Unlike synthetic materials, each slate tile is one of a kind, adding authenticity and a timeless, natural appeal to your home. Additionally, slate is low maintenance when properly sealed and cared for, offering long-lasting beauty and performance for years to come.

Terracotta

Literally meaning ‘baked earth’ terracotta is clay that has been shaped and fired to harden the material into tiles. Ideal for creating a rustic Mediterranean style, our terracotta comes in a variety of shapes and sizes. Some efflorescence may occur after installation, this can be removed with an acid-reaction cleaner but using a rapid setting adhesive helps minimise this occurrence.

Terracotta is fairly durable, though it’s not as hard or dense as some natural stone tiles. It tends to be somewhat porous and softer, making it more prone to chipping, cracking, or wearing down under heavy impact or frequent use. However, when properly installed, sealed, and maintained, terracotta can endure for many years, particularly in residential or low-traffic settings. Careful handling during installation and applying protective finishes are key to extending its lifespan.

To clean terracotta tiles, it’s best to take a gentle approach. Use a mild, pH-neutral cleaner designed for natural stone, avoiding acidic or abrasive products like vinegar or bleach that can harm the surface or break down the sealant. Regularly sweep or vacuum to remove dust and debris, then mop with warm water mixed with your chosen cleaner. For stubborn stains, gently scrub with a soft brush.

While terracotta is traditionally associated with rustic or old-world charm, it’s increasingly being used in modern, minimalist spaces to add warmth and texture. Paired with sleek furniture and neutral tones, terracotta becomes a stylish, earthy accent.

Yes, terracotta tiles can be used with underfloor heating, but there are some important considerations to keep in mind. Terracotta is a natural clay material that conducts heat well, making it a suitable choice for underfloor heating systems. However, because terracotta is porous and can expand or contract with temperature changes, proper installation is crucial. The tiles should be properly sealed to prevent moisture absorption and potential damage from thermal stress. Additionally, the heating system should be gradually brought up to temperature to avoid sudden temperature changes that could cause cracking. When installed and maintained correctly, terracotta tiles paired with underfloor heating can provide a warm, comfortable floor that retains heat effectively and adds a rustic charm to your space.

Terracotta brings a warm, earthy, and inviting look to any space. Its rich natural tones make rooms feel cozy and lived-in, while the handcrafted feel adds timeless character.

Yes, terracotta tiles absolutely need to be sealed. Terracotta is a raw, highly porous material made from natural clay, which means it can easily absorb moisture, stains, and dirt if left untreated.

Historically, terracotta was sealed using a 50:50 mixture of Boiled Linseed Oil and White Spirit, followed by a paste wax or beeswax finish. While still effective, modern sealers offer improved performance and ease of maintenance.

Modern Sealing Process

Due to their extreme porosity, terracotta tiles must be thoroughly sealed using high-quality products. We recommend the following modern sealing method:

  1. Efflorescence Treatment (If Needed):
During installation, salts and minerals within the terracotta may migrate to the surface, a process known as efflorescence. If this occurs, it should be treated using a diluted solution of Fila Deterdek Pro before sealing.

  2. Pre-Grouting Seal:
Once the tiles are fixed, they must be clean and completely dry. Apply 1–2 coats of Fila MP90 Eco Xtreme using a sponge or clean flat brush before grouting. This step prevents grout stains and pigment absorption.

  3. Post-Grouting Seal:
After grouting and thoroughly cleaning off any grout residue, allow the tiles and joints to fully dry, then apply 1–2 additional coats of Fila MP90 Eco Xtreme for enhanced protection.

  4. Surface Finish:
Once the base sealing is complete and fully dry, apply 2 coats of a liquid surface wax—choose from:

    • Fila Matt for a natural matt finish

    • Fila Satin for a subtle sheen (most popular)

    • Fila Long Life for a glossy, durable finish

Travertine

Travertine is a material formed by hot springs, the mineral rich waters evaporate leaving behind deposits of calcium carbonate which solidifies to form travertine. Geologically very young, this stone is often deposited around vegetation which then decays leaving voids in the stone.

These voids may be on the surface of the tile or can sometimes be just below the surface of the tile and can become exposed with use. The surface voids may be filled as part of the finishing process, if any fill becomes dislodged or holes become exposed then a suitable resin-filler can be used to rectify.

The term honed filled applies to our travertine products, which naturally contain surface pits and holes formed during the stone’s creation. These cavities are typically pre-filled at the source using a stone resin, and the tile is then finished with a honed surface. However, some pits and holes may remain partially unfilled, so additional filling with grout might be required during installation to achieve a smooth, even finish.

Travertine offers a beautiful balance of natural elegance and durability. Its soft, earthy tones, gentle veining, and matt finish bring a warm, organic feel that works well in both modern and traditional spaces. The stone’s subtle texture adds character without overwhelming a design, making it a versatile option for floors, walls, bathrooms, and even outdoor areas.

Unlike polished stones, travertine has a more relaxed, lived-in look while still feeling refined and sophisticated. It’s a great choice for those who want the timeless appeal of natural stone with a softer, more inviting finish. With proper sealing and care, travertine is long-lasting and can handle daily wear, making it as practical as it is stylish.

Our Travertine finishes include Honed & Filled and Tumbled, each designed to meet diverse design needs:

  • Honed & Filled – Delivers a smooth, refined surface with a polished, elegant finish. Perfect for high-end residential and commercial spaces, adding a sleek, modern aesthetic.

  • Tumbled – Features a textured, weathered surface that exudes rustic charm. Ideal for creating a timeless, natural look, suitable for both indoor and outdoor environments.

Yes, one of the most beautiful qualities of travertine is the way it ages gracefully. Over time, it develops a soft, natural patina that enhances its texture and brings out its unique character. Many homeowners find that travertine becomes even more charming and visually appealing years after it’s been installed.

Unfilled travertine showcases its natural pits and pores, giving it a raw, rustic appearance. In contrast, filled travertine has these surface cavities filled with resin or cement, resulting in a smoother finish that’s well-suited for indoor flooring and walls where a more refined look is preferred.

Yes, sealing is recommended. Like most natural stones, travertine is porous, so sealing helps protect it from moisture, stains, and wear. With the right sealer, it becomes easier to clean and more resistant to the elements, especially in high traffic areas.
