How to choose mosaic tiles

Mosaic tiles do something larger formats can’t. They bring texture, rhythm and detail to a surface, and the format itself becomes part of the design.

There’s a reason mosaic tiles have never gone out of style. Whether it’s the slim linearity of a kit-kat tile or the organic irregularity of a rustic cut, each format adds a layer of depth and texture that larger tiles simply don’t. Here’s how to choose the right one for your space.

The Linear

The kit-kat tile is defined by its linearity. Slim vertical strips create a strong directional rhythm that draws the eye up a wall or across a splashback with quiet confidence.

Iggy Black Gloss Porcelain Mosaic is the boldest version of this: deep, glossy black with a slight variation in tone across the surface that stops it from reading as flat. Used floor to ceiling in a kitchen or bathroom, it anchors the space completely.

The Herringbone

The herringbone is one of those patterns that has never needed to go anywhere. Classic in the truest sense, it brings a natural sense of movement and direction to a wall without ever feeling busy.

Its blush pink tones are dashed with grey and gold, and the substantial natural variation across the surface means each sheet reads slightly differently, making the wall feel genuinely alive rather than repetitive. Verde Marl Honed Marble Herringbone Mosaic takes the same format in a much darker direction: a deep, forest green marble that makes the herringbone pattern dramatic and considered in equal measure.

The Hexagon

Hexagon mosaics work because the geometry is regular enough to create rhythm but each tile is small enough that the overall effect reads as texture rather than pattern. Equally at home on a bathroom wall or floor, they work particularly well where you want something considered without being graphic.

Fitz Claret Honed Marble Rustic Cut Mosaic is the version to choose if you want the format to make a statement. The deep, wine-red marble is richly veined and the rustic cut brings out the natural drama of the stone. Used on a feature wall or shower surround, it’s one of the most striking things you can do with a small-format tile.
