Slate is a very dense material and so, generally, only a surface sealant such as Fila Satin is required. If using slate externally then a surface wax should not be used; it is usual for tiles to be allowed to weather naturally. Flags of 30mm thickness are generally used externally whereas thinner tiles are for internal use. When fixing a material externally, the choice of whether to seal or not becomes one of personal preference combined with considerations of the installation environment. Many people choose to leave the stone unsealed and let it weather naturally with time. As it weathers the stone will gain character and develop a look all its own.
