With a rich, almost burgundy hue, our Fossil Brown Riven Sandstone Cobbles bring depth and character to any outdoor setting. Their earthy tones pair beautifully with natural landscapes, creating a warm, rustic, and charming atmosphere.

Inspired by traditional English stone, these cobbles feature subtle tonal variations and an organic riven texture that emulate the look and feel of genuine, hand-finished stone. The result is a surface that adds both warmth and understated sophistication to patios, pathways, and feature areas.

For driveways, busy walkways, or projects that demand a more substantial stone, choose our durable 40–45 mm cobbles. For lighter-use areas such as garden edging or decorative features, our slimmer 20–25 mm option offers the same authentic style with a finer profile.

When using natural stone outdoors, you can either allow the stone to weather naturally or seal it with Fila MP90 Eco Xtreme to help protect against staining and slow the effects of weathering.

  • Adhesive: For the best results, use a high-performance adhesive specially formulated for the dense composition of porcelain tiles.
  • Grout: We provide a broad selection of Ardex tile grouts that are flexible, water-repellent, and available in a wide range of colours, perfect for matching or contrasting with your tiles.
  • Maintenance: Fila Stop Dirt can be used to make routine cleaning easier.

Proper ground preparation is essential for the successful installation of stone paving and cobbles, with requirements varying depending on site conditions and intended use.

  • Clearance Below Damp-Proof Course: Paving should be installed at least 150mm below the damp-proof course (DPC) of any building, with a minimum fall of 1:60 to allow water to drain away from the property.
  • Stabilising Layer: A compacted base of approximately 100mm scalping or crushed hardcore should be laid, followed by a 30–40mm compacted sand bed.
  • Perimeter Tiles: Perimeter tiles should be bedded on wet mortar to secure the edges and prevent movement during installation.
  • Bedding the Remaining Tiles: Remaining tiles can be laid on a semi-dry 4:1 sand/cement mix, depending on the stone thickness.
  • Stone Porosity: The porosity and shade of the stone should always be considered. Light-coloured stones should not be laid with a wet mix, as cement pigments may cause staining.
  • Suitable Substrates: Stone paving 20mm thick or greater can typically be laid on a prepared sub-base. Thinner stone or porcelain tiles should be installed on a suitable external-grade concrete slab using adhesive and grout.
  • Grouting and Jointing: Once laid, joints can be filled using dry sharp or pit sand brushed into the gaps.
